Hoary Vervain. This is a common native herbaceous “wild flower” plant found throughout much of the central United States, although it has been introduced to other parts of the country. It produces smaller purple flowers along “spikes” at the top of the plant that will bloom from later June through September. It is a useful plant for pollinators, especially for the Common Buckeye Butterfly. Hoary Vervain prefers well drained areas and is generally drought tolerate. I did not intentionally grow these seeds but gathered them from wild plants found in my home garden that was once planted as a “prairie strip” after we developed the property. I call these seeds “chemically free” because I use only occasional organic fertilizer on my home garden space. The seeds of this wildflower are exceptionally small so it probably works well to simply broadcast them over a desired prepared area and let nature do its thing. 3 grams. $2.49/packet (sales tax included in price).
